As a particularly fast-growing region, East Africa is lacking tens of thousands of schools. The region has committed itself to reducing carbon emissions by 25% by 2030. At the same time, Uganda is experiencing an overproduction of eucalyptus and pine, calling for the creation of a sustainable timber processing industry.
EcoPrefab was developed in response to all three challenges. Based on lime-plastered wall panels made of sustainble timber, prefabricated in a controlled factory environment, EcoPrefab presents a viable solution to building many schools, at an affordable cost, and in a short period of time.
Relatively basic building typologies such as single-storey classroom blocks, teacher accommodation, school toilets and kitchens are ideally suited for prefabrication and mass production, combining cost effectiveness with ease of quality control and much shorter construction periods.
Using local and regenerative materials is one of the easiest ways to reduce the destructive impact of construction on our planet. An EcoPrefab classroom saves 75% carbon – and creates local jobs at the same time!
